Programme at Freedom not Fear 2022

2–5 September (Friday–Monday)
Mundo B, Rue d’Edimbourg 26, Brussels (Fri–Sun) · European Parliament (Mon)

Freedom not Fear is an un-conference, the whole programme will be planned with participants on the spot – so naturally there is no fixed programme yet. But we want to give you an idea of what to expect, so here is a rough schedule:

  • Friday, 18:00 – arrival and socialising
  • Friday, 19:00 – opening and keynote by Jane Kilpatrick: Use of surveillance technology against refugees at the European borders
  • Saturday and Sunday – barcamp: sessions, workshop etc.
  • Saturday night – networking dinner
  • Monday, 10:00–11:30 – European Parliament visit
  • Monday, 12:00-15:00 – meetings with EU policy makers

Keynote: We are kickstarting the event on Friday evening with a keynote by Jane Kilpatrick (researcher at Statewatch) titled “Use of surveillance technology against refugees at the European borders”, followed by discussion.

Weekend barcamp: Saturday and Sunday is the time for our self-organised barcamp to discuss and push forward current topics. Throughout these two days you can join workshops or start your own sessions whenever interesting ideas come up. In different formats like skill-sharing, discussion, action-planning we plan and implement specific coordinated international activities on important topics. Some sessions that have been proposed so far:

  • Orwell’s Wallet: European electronic identity system leads us straight into surveillance capitalism
  • Biometric surveillance: how we can ban Clearview AI, Pim Eyes & similar services in the EU’s AI Act?
  • Atlas of Data Retention in the EU
  • Debunking Systemic Injustices in States-Ruled by Digital Authoritarianism
  • Watch and discuss Documentary “Digital Dissidents”
  • From Chat Control to Total Control: how the EU’s CSA Regulation threatens the entire internet – plus more workshops about Chat Control

Networking & social hours: between the sessions there will be free time and activities to connect with activists from different countries, learn about their approach, their views, successes, issues and advice. Everyone is invited to share their expertise on all sessions and topics.

There will be a social dinner on Saturday evening. We would love to have all of you there to network in an informal setting. Please let us know whether you are coming, so we can plan the amount of food accordingly.

Meeting Members of the European Parliament (MEPs): after a productive and inspirational weekend, we will visit the European Parliament to learn about how they work and to talk to MEPs about our concerns for privacy and freedom.

If you are planning to visit FnF without registering, please let us now when you are planning to come so we can plan on food and room capacity. E-mail us: contact@freedomnotfear.org
